SOD Installation - St. Augustine, Bermuda & Zoysia
SOD Installation is one of the most rewarding landscaping services we provide. You can virtually have a new lush lawn in just hours. Installing SOD is labor intensive and is the most expensive way to rennovate your lawn. But at Lawnborne, we give quality service and an affordable price. There are several SOD dealers that we buy from in the Metroplex. There are basically three varieties of grass to choose from: St. Augustine, Bermuda and Zoysia. Each grass has different tolerences and water needs:St. Augustine Raleigh – The most popular St. Augustine found in this area. Proven to be winter hardy (as opposed to the disastrous introduction of Floratam St. Augustine in the 1980s) and more shade tolerant and disease resistant than common St. Augustine, this variety should be the mainstay of any reputable grass retailer.
St. Augustine Palmetto – An up and coming strain that one day may be the mainstay of new St. Augustine sales. Its deeper root system promotes a higher degree tolerance to both shade and drought as well as cold resistance. Currently, its higher price still keeps Raleigh sales ahead of Palmetto.
Bermuda
Requiring less water and tolerating foot traffic better than St. Augustine, Bermuda is an excellent choice for full-sun areas. It is completely shade intolerant, however, and must be planted in areas that will always have 100% sun. Three varieties that do well in our area include:
Common Bermuda – This variety spreads through seed propagation, which sends up tall, unsightly seed pods just days after mowing. As a result, it has been avoided in most residential areas in favor of the hybrids.
Tex-Turf 10 Bermuda – A hybrid Bermuda that spreads through leaders (or runners) rather than seed, it is our recommendation for the average homeowner. It has an excellent track history in North Texas.
Tif 419 (Tif Bermuda) – 419 is a low-growing, "golf course" strain of hybrid Bermuda that is more attractive when mowed more frequently with a reel-type mower.
Zoysia
With a moderate inherent resistance to insect and disease and a slow rate of growth (therefore requiring less frequent mowing) Zoysia is becoming a more popular option with area homeowners. While not as shade tolerant as St. Augustine it will take more shade than Bermuda and is comparable to Bermuda as far as withstanding wear and tear. Here are two varieties that are available:
Palisades – Resembles a “dwarf” version of St. Augustine and is touted as being the most shade tolerant of the Zoysias.
Emerald – A very fine-bladed variety that resemble a lush Tif 419 Bermuda lawn.
SOD Installation Choices:
Basic Installtion: (Our most requested) We recomend this service for most of our customers. We will mow down and scalp your current lawn with a weed-eater and lawn mower. We will remove the grass clippings and debris. We will then lay down the SOD on your lawn. We will cut and form the SOD to accomidate your sidewalks, sprinklers, flower beds and other objects on your lawn. Once we finish laying the SOD, we roll the lawn to esure the grass has full contact with the ground.
Premium Installation: We recommend this service for customers who have lawns that have very poor soil conditions: Rocks and debris, large roots, small and large tree stumps, holes and large indentions, un-even areas, poor drainage (we can install a french drain) and other factors. With this service we will remove your current lawn by spraying round up onto it. Once the lawn is dead, we remove it with a SOD cutter.We remove the dead vegetation. We then rototill the lawn. We level,rake, and grade the dirt. Additional soil is sometimes needed. Once all these steps are taken, we lay down the SOD.

Bermuda (419)
BERMUDA - native to Africa. Has excellent wear, drought, and salt tolerance. It is used primarily on golf courses, athletic fields, tennis courts, and bowling greens. It becomes dormant (turns brown) in cold weather and is commonly over seeded with ryegrass to maintain green winter color. Bermuda grass grows and spreads rapidly.
Bermuda (Celebration)
Excellent wear, drought, and salt tolerance. Used primarily on golf courses, athletic fields, tennis courts, and bowling greens Becomes dormant (turns brown) in cold weather. Grows and spreads rapidly
St. Augustine (Del Mar)
Very Cold Tolerant. Grows Well In Full Sun. Has Best Shade Tolerance Of Any St. Augustine Superior Emerald Green Color Maintains Excellent Winter Color
St. Augustine (Palmetto)
Densely Spreading Variety Aggressive Growth Habit Rich, Dark Green Color Cold Tolerant. Performs Well In Sun And Shade
St. Augustine (Raleigh)
Cold Hardy St. Augustine Medium Green Color
Shade Tolerant
Zoysia (Emerald)
Fine-Textured Zoysia Grass. Slow To Spread, But Aggressive To Crowd Out Weeds And Other Grass

Zoysia (Cavalier)
Cavalier is a fine textured Zoysia grass also developed at Texas A&M University. It works excellently on home lawns, golf course fairways, tee boxes, and highly visible areas. Not as shade tolerant as St. Augustine but is superior to most bermuda's.
Zoysia (Palisades)
Palisades is a medium textured, high density turf suitable for home lawns, golf fairways and roughs, sports fields, industrial parks, and highway medians.
Palisades is a medium to coarse textured turf noted for its shade tolerance and low water use requirements.

It easy to start, simply fill out our request form, or give us a call. We will be glad to give you a free estimate. The Lawn Clean Up Service provides you with: Clearing of weed trees and other vegetation, mowing, edging, and weed-eating of grass, along with removal of any other vegetation or even junk like old toys, refrigerators and air-conditioners. Once we are done with the clean up, we can add mulch to your flower beds like we did for the customer in the pictures to the right. We can also plant new trees, plants, flowers, or even build a new fence. Adding mulch is always a good idea for your flower beds and gardens. It keeps moisture in and weeds out by blocking out the sunlight. We also can clean out your flower beds, lay down plastic or material, then place the mulch on top. There are many types of mulch: Cedar, Pine and Cypress are just some you can purchase by the bag or yard.
